Description

Smallwood Junior and Infants School was built in 1898 by The London School Board, designed by architect T J Bailey, and enlarged in 1908 by The London County Council, as noted on attached plaques. The building features a symmetrical elevation facing Hazelhurst Road, with a prominent three-storey central section that is five bays wide, flanked by six-storey towers. These towers are connected by lower four-storey ranges that are four bays wide, framed by three-bay wide gable ends of tall three-storey end pavilions. Constructed from yellow stock bricks with stone and red brick detailing, the school has tile roofs and copper-capped towers.

The central block has piers that rise to the parapet, defining the tiers of windows. A moulded band runs around the building between the first and second floors. The second-floor windows feature cambered arches, and the steep-pitched roof includes miniature dormers topped with spirelets. The towers have paired windows, with third and fourth-floor windows set in cambered arches, while the fifth-floor windows have round-arched heads, which are repeated as blind windows on the exposed sides. The square caps of ogival section support balustrades, from which slender domed lanterns with spirelets rise. The linking ranges have third-floor windows with cambered heads and scalloped parapets. The end pavilions are designed similarly to the central block but have most openings as blind. A smaller building to the north-east and the school-keeper's lodge in the east angle are constructed in a compatible style and materials.
