Description
The former Broadwater Road School, now located at 10 Gatton Road, was built around 1900 by the London School Board. The architect was T J Bailey. The building is constructed in the Northern Renaissance style and exhibits the tall, narrow proportions typical of schools from that era. It is built of yellow brick with stone and red brick dressings, and has tile roofs.
The main facade, overlooking Broadwater Road, features a central five-storey section flanked by six-storey towers. The central section incorporates recessed tiers of windows within arches, topped by a group of three windows set within an arcade and framed by a gable with elaborate carvings. The towers have single windows in the top floors and are topped with copper roofs featuring spirelets. Stepped-back three-storey wings extend from the towers, each section containing pairs of tripartite windows, with a tall central window flanked by shorter windows and rising between banded piers into a half-gable. The left-hand bay’s fenestration is partially obscured. The chimneys have overhanging courses.
The Gatton Road elevation is also symmetrical, with a recessed four-bay centre including segmental-headed dormers between pairs of tripartite windows. These window groupings are similar to those on the Broadwater Road facade, but each pair is articulated by a central arched entrance recess. Again, the left-hand bay’s fenestration is partially obscured.
