Description
The Kings Head Public House, located at 84 Upper Tooting Road, was built in 1896 by W M Brutton, who was known for designing many public houses. This building is considered one of his finest works and features an interior that has seen little alteration over the years. The architectural style is characterized by a bold and symmetrical design, typical of late 19th-century gin palaces.
The exterior is made of red brick with decorative stucco elements and has a slate roof. The central section of the building has three storeys and three windows, topped with a steep hipped roof that culminates in a dome. Above the second-floor windows is a large, decorated lucarne that displays the inscription "The Kings Head." On the first floor, there are three pairs of French windows that open onto a verandah, which is adorned with an iron balustrade and an ogee roof. The ground floor features a splayed bay with an entrance to the bar. Each side of the central portion has two-storey sections with mansard roofs and pointed dormers behind a balustrade. The wings on either side are one and a half storeys tall, each with one window. The left wing has a ramped parapet that is pierced by a bull's-eye window, while the right wing serves as a facade only, with a blank first-floor window that bears the inscription "Rebuilt 1896."
Inside, the pub is richly decorated with cut brilliant glass, patterned tiles, and wrought iron features.
