Description
The Elizabeth Newton Wing at Springfield Hospital was built in 1895 by Rowland Plumbe in response to the Lunacy Act of 1890. Its purpose was to separate children with learning disabilities from adults with mental health conditions. The building, formerly known as the 'Annexe for Idiot Children', is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features slated roofs with tall brick chimney stacks. The central tower has a gabled roof topped with a cupola.
The wing has a small echelon-type plan with four ward wings and is designed in an Elizabethan style to match the main hospital. It is mostly two stories tall, with a central range that includes a three-story battlemented tower, two window bays, and a canted bay window. The windows are transom and mullion, with most featuring small panes. The diagonally-set echelon pavilions have battlemented stair towers at the inner angles and wider day-room towers with canted bay windows at the ends.
Inside, there is a central dining hall with an arch-braced timber roof and a clerestory. This building is a unique example of a children's annex within a former Lunatic Asylum, reflecting the concern of Medical Superintendent Hugh Gardner-Hill for the separation of children with learning disabilities from adults with mental health conditions. The building's plan is also quite unusual for this type of facility.
