Description
Springfield Hospital, the main building, was designed by Edward Lapidge and built in 1840 as the Surrey County Lunatic Asylum, with later extensions. It features a grand symmetrical Tudor-style design that encloses a large courtyard. The building is constructed of red brick with some blue brick diapering, stone dressings, and slate roofs.
At the center, there is a three-storey pavilion with gables, which is connected by two-storey flanking ranges to three-storey embattled blocks. Long two-storey wings extend at right angles, each with three-storey embattled blocks at their centers, and are terminated by four-storey embattled end-pavilions. The central pavilion is framed by advanced wings, and a short flight of steps leads up to the entrance block, which is three windows wide and features windows of varying designs.
The pointed-arch entrance is framed in a square head with a label, and the spandrels are filled with quatrefoils. A stone band with a ribbon motif separates the ground and first floors, while the second floor displays the date 1840 in diaper. The gable is adorned with a clock in a lozenge plaque and rises to a tall finial with a weather vane. Each wing has three windows at the ground floor, and the first and second floors are united behind a single window that consists of six lancets high and four broad. Each gable features a single light. The four-storey end-pavilions have advanced angle-bays and an advanced center with a plaque dated 1874.
