Description

The St Clement Danes Holborn Estate Almshouses and Chapel were built between 1848 and 1849 by R Hesketh. This well-composed group of 40 cottages, arranged in pairs around a garden, provides accommodation in terraced blocks one window wide. Three additional cottages are linked to each end of the garden. The chapel sits centrally on the axis of the main block. The architecture is in the Gothic Revival style, constructed primarily from red brick with stone dressings and grey brick diaperwork, topped with slate roofs. Each pair of cottages has a simple dripstone over the front door. A defining feature is the prominent clusters of Tudor-style chimneys rising from the upstands that separate the cottage pairs. The chapel features a gable, a clock, and a large traceried window, flanked by louvred turrets. The diapering in the gable displays an anchor motif, the letters 'CD', and the date 1848.
