Description

The Church of St Mary (Summerstown) was built in 1903 by Godfrey Pinkerton. It features Gothic massing with gable ends on the nave, chancel, and alternate bays of the aisles arranged in a transeptal layout. The nave includes a narthex, and the south tower at the chancel, which houses the organ loft, remains incomplete and has a square hipped roof.

Constructed from red brick with stone dressings and tiled roofs, the building's window tracery and other detailing are non-traditional. The narthex has three advanced bays, with the center bay being saucer-domed and segmental in shape, while the outer bays are gabled. It features twin double doors set beneath cambered-arch heads. A stone bandcourse and coping frame a vertical pattern of stone bands and brick panels across the upper facade, which extends around the corners to the parapets of the non-transeptal aisle bays.

The nave gable is adorned with a triplet of lancet windows, their blind round-arched heads connected by a stone band. The transeptal aisle bays contain large round-arched windows, and the tower has a round-arched door surround.

Inside, the transeptal aisle bays are topped with barrel vaults, while alternate bays feature double arches leading to the nave, supported by granite piers. The carving, including the font and cover, was done by Lawrence A Turner, and the east window was created by Morris and Company in 1928, using designs by Burne-Jones.
