Description
Melcome Primary and Infants School is a school built in 1901 by T J Bailey. It is constructed of red brick with buff terracotta and has a tiled roof. The building has three storeys and features a symmetrical north elevation with eight main bays, including a four-bay center divided by rusticated pilasters above the ground floor, each bay containing three windows. This center is flanked by advanced balustraded towers and additional three-window wings. The first-floor windows in each bay are pedimented and adorned with decorative terracotta work, while the other windows are square-headed and sashed with small panes and glazing bars. The building has a cornice and a blocking course, with entrances located beneath the towers. The southern facade is equally significant, featuring a six-window center block flanked by square towers with pyramidal roofs, although there is an unfortunate late 20th-century extension to the right. A dated panel faces Fulham Palace Road. The school is noted for being unusually elaborate and well-preserved, representing Bailey's later work in school design.
