Description

The Hungerford School is a late Victorian school building dating from 1895-6, designed by T.J. Bailey for the London School Board. It is constructed primarily of stock brick with red-brick dressings, and features slate roofs, except for the tower roofs which are lead and timber. The building is largely three storeys high. The north-west front, facing Hungerford Road, has a central twelve-window range topped by a parapet, with lower, recessed bays connecting to the end wings, each with three windows and a pediment. The south-east front is more elaborate, with a five-bay central section three storeys high, topped by a hipped slate roof, flanked by tall twin towers with ogee-shaped roofs, balconies and ornamental cupolas. Five-storey connecting bays to the left and right of the towers link to three-storey pedimented wings, mirroring the design of the north-west front. The school is of a similar design to Montem School on Hornsey Road.
