Description

The railings, walls, gate piers, and gates to Caledonian Park, built in 1854, extend approximately 250 meters along the south side of the park on Market Road and about 120 meters along the east side on Shearling Way. They were probably designed by J.B. Bunning. The structure is made of cast iron with brick panels at the corners. The gate piers are panelled antae topped with antefixae and bracketed finials. The railings feature a coved plinth and cylindrical rails, except for two square rails at the center of each bay, which are bracketed. The railings also have bud finials, with every other one being taller and pierced. The gates align with the railings and include a curved brace across each panel, creating a circle in the resulting spandrel. There are seven gates on the south side and five on the east side, with the central gate flanked by pairs of piers and a narrower gate on each side. The south-east corner of the park is chamfered and includes three panels of yellow brick set in Flemish bond, with one flat-arched entrance that is now blocked, along with a stone plinth and brick coping. The existing railings are only part of the original boundary for the Caledonian Market. Some gate piers and gates are damaged, there are occasional gaps in the railings, and there is a gap of about 15 meters in the railings on Shearling Way.
