Description
The J Lyons and Company First World War Memorial, located in Margravine Cemetery, is a granite pillar that stands approximately 3.6 meters high and weighs nine tons. It has four sides, an ornate carved curving top, and a splayed base, resting on a single-stepped base. The names of 227 individuals who died in the First World War are inscribed in black letters within recessed panels on each side of the pillar.
On the splayed base, there is a bronze wreath with an inscription in raised letters that reads: "ERECTED BY/ J. LYONS & CO LIMITED/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE STAFF WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918."
In front of the pillar, a granite trough was installed in 2002 to hold wreaths, which includes an inscription noting the memorial's relocation to Hammersmith.
