Description
The war memorial to the children of Upper North Street School is a tall stone structure located in the northern part of Poplar Recreation Ground, near several Grade II-listed buildings and the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mattias. The memorial features an angel in mourning, with outstretched wings and clasped hands, standing on a three-staged Gothic base.
The upper stage is designed as a hooded shrine, with blind arches on each face supported by non-canonical Corinthian columns at the corners, featuring black stone shafts and white stone capitals and bases. The front arch is adorned with floral carvings in low relief, and below it is a panel with a roundel that contains the seal of Poplar Borough Council. The main dedicatory inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ 18 CHILDREN/ WHO WERE KILLED/ BY A BOMB/ DROPPED FROM A/ GERMAN AEROPLANE/ UPON THE L.C.C./ SCHOOL UPPER/ NORTH STREET/ POPLAR ON THE/ 13TH OF JUNE 1917./ ALFRED H. WARREN O.B.E./ MAYOR/ J. BUTEUX SKEGGS,/ TOWN CLERK." The names and ages of the children commemorated are inscribed on the side faces.
The middle stage, made of white stone, consists of three steps that support the shrine. An inscription on the middle step states "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION," with "A.R. ADAMS/ POPLAR" below it. The bottom stage is a large black base.
