Description
The Sheringham and Beeston War Memorial is located on The Boulevard, on the south-east side of a small garden. It is raised on a two-step hexagonal base and stands 9 meters high, designed in the form of an Eleanor Cross made of Clipsham Stone. The lower step is surrounded by a low, decorative railing.
The memorial tapers to a circular stone roof, topped with a small Greek cross on an orb. Its central column features two tiers of Gothic design. The lower tier is adorned with a band of trefoils beneath six Gothic pediments, while the upper tier is simpler, consisting of a blind arcade of cusped lancets.
Inscriptions are carved on the sides of the lower tier. The main inscription, which wraps around the memorial in two lines, reads:
(upper line) TO KEEP IN REMEMBRANCE/ THE MEN OF SHERINGHAM/ AND BEESTON REGIS WHO/
(lower line) GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ CAUSE OF RIGHT & JUSTICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR/
The names of the fallen are commemorated in dated year-groups on each side. An additional inscription for the Second World War states AND OF THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945.
At the base, the memorial is inscribed with THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
Please note that the planters and garden seat surrounding the memorial are not included in the listing.
