Description

The Department of Health and Social Security, located at 133 East India Dock Road, was built around 1840. It features a stucco facade and has two storeys plus a basement, with a total of 17 bays. The lower windows have round arches, and some are blind. The central five bays are recessed and include a panelled door, with a pavilion and wing on each side. This building was originally constructed as a seamen's home by Richard Green. It is part of a group that includes Pope John House, the piers and walls to Poplar Recreation Ground, and the Memorial in the Recreation Ground opposite.
