Description

Fitch and Sons Works is a three-bay, three-storey building constructed around 1870-1880, located on West Ferry Road in the Isle of Dogs. This structure features a more formal design than is typical for similar buildings. It is made of stock brick and has office and display workshop windows on either side of double doors. These doors are framed by broad stucco pilasters and topped with a cornice entablature that is interrupted by a central hatch rank. The windows are fitted with slender wrought iron bars adorned with fleur-de-lys spikes.

On the upper floors, there are segmental arched, iron-framed windows that flank a central round-arched keystoned hatch rank, which has bull-nosed white brick reveals. This design extends to the base of a low stucco pediment-gable. The flanking sections feature a panelled parapet with coping. Inside, the building has timber floors supported by cast iron columns. The hatch doors are panelled and include small pane glazing, while the arch's lunette is similarly glazed. This building is a notable example of one of the smaller warehouses that once thrived near the West India Dock, complete with a built-in retail outlet on the ground floor, which is now a rare feature. It also holds group value with the West India Docks.
