Description
The Quadrangle Stores at West India Dock, built in 1825 by John Rennie the Younger, is a notable structure made of stock brick with Portland stone dressings and shallow hipped slate roofs featuring overhanging eaves. The building has a quadrangular layout with an additional square of buildings in the center, which includes offices, engineers' workshops, stores, and a co-operage.
The entrance front features a tall central archway with a cornice and blocking course, flanked by eighteen bay wings arranged in a 3:14:1 pattern. Firewalls extend from the roofline, and there are tall stacks. All windows are sash with glazing bars. While the other facades are plain, the workshop door bays are accented with granite architraves. The courtyard fronts lack significant architectural detail. The north range includes open sheds supported by cast-iron columns, likely used for timber seasoning.
The central block shares a similar architectural style but may be slightly later in date, featuring dressed granite doorways with elliptical heads. This building is a rare example of an early purpose-built structure that illustrates the operations of the Dock Company.
