Description

The Former Excise Office, built in 1807 by Thomas Morris, is a two-storey building located on West India Dock Road. Constructed from stock brick with stucco dressings and topped with hipped slate roofs, it features six bays arranged in a 2:2:2 pattern, with the central bay set forward. The ground floor has been altered, with the original central doorway replaced by two windows, and modern doors installed in the second and fifth bays. The outer arched windows have segmental pediments and stucco architraves. The upper floor windows are all sash windows with glazing bars, architraves, pediments, and a cill band. A balustraded parapet with a central vestigial pediment crowns the building. The north elevation has a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, while the south elevation is lowered and features two windows separated by a chimney stack. The stucco embellishments were added in the mid-19th century.
