Description
The Ferry House Public House is a three-storey building located on Ferry Street in the Isle of Dogs, likely originating from the 17th century and associated with the Greenwich Ferry. It is primarily a late 18th century to early 19th century structure, faced in stucco, with later 19th and early 20th century alterations, particularly to the public house front which has been built out and plastered.
The east front features upper floors that are set back behind a projecting pub front, topped with a plain parapet and a slated mansard attic. The sash windows have later 19th century glazing. On the first floor, there is a projecting rectangular bay with a swept hipped lead roof, which likely replaced a former porch and serves as a ferry lookout. This bay has two irregularly sized windows at the front, one of which may have been a door leading to a gallery or balcony, both framed with moulded architrave surrounds. To the right, there is a late 19th century extension that includes a two-storey canted bay window. Inside, the first floor retains some plain 18th century panelling and remnants of a simple 18th century staircase balustrade above the ground floor.
