Description

This is an early 19th-century villa, likely built between 1830 and 1850, consisting of two distinct phases of construction, the southern end seemingly added later. The villa is constructed of red brick with stucco and Portland stone dressings. The west-facing elevation features four irregular bays, with three bays forming a service area to the north and a separate entrance bay containing the main ground and first-floor rooms facing south towards the river. The windows are mainly glazing bar sashes with stucco reveals, and segmental arches of gauged brick. A sill band runs across the first floor. A small, round-headed blind window is located on the first floor, to the left of an external chimney stack. The roof is topped by a parapet with a spaced dentil moulding and stone coping. The south bay of this elevation is emphasised by channelled brick piers, a stone string course, and block brackets supporting the parapet coping. This detailing is repeated on the south-facing, pediment-gabled elevation, which incorporates a large, two-storey rectangular bay window constructed of stone and plaster. The bay window has a tripartite arrangement of sash and casement windows, a bracketed cornice, and antefixae to the lead roof. A first-floor stone balcony is supported by shaped brackets with capped stone dies and features iron balustrading arranged in a crossed-bar pattern. A later stable wing to the west has coupled round-headed windows above segmental arched former stable doors. The east-facing elevation is irregular. The villa predates the industrial development of the Isle of Dogs, and is one of the few remaining examples of its kind, standing within a largely working-class area.
