Description
Millwall Fire Station is a fire station built between 1904 and 1905, designed by the Fire Brigade section of the London County Council Architects' Department. The building features painted stone on the ground floor and brick above, topped with a slate mansard roof. It stands three storeys high plus a roof storey and has seven bays. The entrance is square-headed and located in the third bay from the left. To the right, there are two appliance room entrances, also square-headed, which have replacement metal doors.
On the ground floor, there are three square-headed sashed windows, now fitted with plate glass. A cornice runs above the ground floor. The upper floors are symmetrically designed with giant pilasters that rise through the first and second floors. The centre pair of pilasters is spaced wider than the others, and the centre bay features a scrolly open pediment made of brick. The first floor has segmental-headed paired sashed windows, except for the centre bay, which has a triplet of square-headed windows topped with a segmental pediment and a prominent central keystone. The second floor contains square-headed paired windows.
The dormer windows are square-headed with segmental pediments, except for the centre window, which has a triangular pediment in brick. The sashes have glazing bars, except on the ground floor. Above the second floor, there is a brick dentil cornice, and tall slab chimneys rise from the roof. To the right, there is a return with three circular windows, one of which is set in a single-storey rear block that has a scalloped parapet.
