Description

This is an 1860 office block associated with the former Burrell’s iron works, now known as Burrell’s Colours. It is a tall, three-storey building constructed of stock brick and designed to resemble a pair of two-bay houses, with a third bay slightly recessed to the left. The upper floors feature sash windows with glazing bars, flat gauged arches, and stucco sills. The building has a parapet and brick string course. The ground floor originally had three windows, one of which is now a doorway. Three doorways, each with plain stucco surrounds and cornice hoods supported by elongated console brackets, are also present on the ground floor. The side elevation, overlooking the entrance yard, has four bays and a returned parapet. A short wall with a round arched doorway for pedestrian access, featuring a large brick keystone and impost, juts out alongside the gateway. A two-storey wing extends to the rear, with a parapet and both segmental and round arched windows. To the south of this wing is a two-storey works range, also with segmental arched windows. A tall, octagonal chimney stack with a tapering profile and a conical pedestal base abuts the west side of the works range; it likely dates from when the premises were used as a paint manufactory. The office block forms part of a limited number of surviving iron foundries, which were formerly vital for shipbuilding in the Docklands. It is linked to Burrell’s Wharf on West Ferry Road.
