Description
Bereys' Buildings is a former office and warehouse constructed around 1870. It is built of red brick with limestone dressings and has four storeys plus a basement. The building features regular elevations with six bays facing George Street and ten bays on Bixteth Street. The end and corner bays project slightly and are designed with more elaborate detailing. The entrances are located in the end bays. Most windows run uninterrupted, with segmented arches for all but the top floor, which has flat arches. These windows are adorned with stone hood moulds and shaped lintels, and feature iron mullions. The building has a shaped parapet and a modillion cornice. The corner bays include large printed arched windows on the upper two storeys, with oculus and carved stonework in the tympana. A stone plinth runs throughout, with tooled lower courses and each bay separated by battered set-off buttresses. Decorative ironwork railings enhance the exterior, and there are brick ridge stacks topped with stone moulded caps and contemporary posts. Bereys' Buildings is part of a group with the adjacent Windsor Building and Lombard Chambers.
