Description

The Lion Tavern is a public house built in the mid-19th century, with the ground floor front remodeled and the interior refitted around 1905. The materials used include a timber and glass pub front, stucco for the upper storeys, and a slate roof.

The building is three storeys high and features three bays on each street front. The ground floor has panelled wood pilasters that support paired consoles with a cornice above. The windows are adorned with etched glass panels. The first and second floors have rusticated quoins, a sill course on the second floor, a bracketed frieze, a cornice, and a plain parapet. The windows have raised architraves with ears, and the first floor windows have segmental heads. The second floor features sash windows with glazing bars.

Inside, the public bar has a panelled bar counter with consoles, a glazed bar back with etched glass, shelves, and a pedimented opening for access. The right-hand end of the counter has a superstructure with a pot-shelf. There is a tiled dado with Art Nouveau detailing on the bar side of the corridor, which also has a mosaic floor. Leading off the corridor are a news room, indicated by its window glass, and a drinking lobby with a glazed dome overhead. Between the news room and the lobby is a match-boarded projection containing a dumb waiter. The news room and lobby feature contemporary fireplaces.

The Lion Tavern is an important example of a lavishly refurbished turn-of-the-century public house that retains its original plan and fittings almost entirely intact.
