Description
The Union Marine Buildings, originally designed by Sir James Picton, is an office building completed in 1868. It features ashlar stonework with a granite basement. The facade has six bays, with an additional five bays facing Hackins Hey. The basement is rusticated, while the ground floor includes round-headed windows with keystones and granite panels in between. The entrance is located in the first bay, characterized by a round-headed design with a keystone and a round hood supported by brackets, which displays arms. Above, the first floor has six windows framed by pilastered architraves and a dentilled cornice, beneath shallow balustraded balconies that extend from the round-arched windows on the top floor, which are adorned with columns featuring foliated capitals. The building is capped with a very heavy cornice that has cable moulding and projects over round-arched machicolations, with round-headed attic lights above.
