Description
The Isle of Dogs War Memorial is a tribute featuring a wooden Calvary cross topped with a cast iron figure of Christ, which is painted white. The cross stands on a plinth made of Portland stone. The plinth is inscribed with a dedication that reads: "REMEMBER BEFORE GOD / THE GALLANT DEAD WHOSE / NAMES ARE WRITTEN HERE / THOUGH THEIR BODIES LIE / IN OTHER LANDS / THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR KING AND COUNTRY / AUGUST 1914-19 / GRANT THEM O LORD / ETERNAL REST AND LET / LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE / UPON THEM."
On two sides of the plinth, the names of those who fell are inscribed, but they have become illegible over time.
