Description

A warehouse of the 1870s and 1880s, forming part of Metropolitan Wharf. The building is six storeys high and constructed primarily of stock brick, with red brick window arches. It has eight bays, including off-centre ranks of hatches. A deep frieze below the cornice is inscribed with the name of the wharf. The building is topped by a heavy, modillion bracket moulded cornice and a parapet raised into two shallow, pedimented gables, each containing an oculus over a group of four bays. The hatches have small-pane glazing and flush panels, contained within the same reveal up to a segmental arch on the top floor. Original pivoting iron hoists with linked circle bracing to the spandrels remain in place for both ranks of hatches. The windows, small-paned and iron-framed, are set within gauged red brick segmental arches. The riverside elevation is generally similar to that of the adjoining wharf, but the ground floors of both warehouses 'B' and 'C' have been opened up with cast iron columns, flanged with Doric capitals, supporting a riveted girder entablature spanning four bays.
