Description
The Prospect of Whitby Public House is a historic building located at 57 Wapping Wall, originally believed to date back to around 1520. However, the front elevation was refaced in the early 19th century. The structure is built of yellow brick and stands three storeys tall with three windows. It features architraves around recessed sash windows with glazing bars. The south-west elevation is designed to imitate stone and is now painted white, while the river elevation includes a hooded balcony with a needled balustrade. Although the interior has been significantly altered, some 18th-century dado panelling remains on the first floor. The building is included in the register primarily for its historic associations and as a surviving riverside inn. The Prospect of Whitby, Pelican Stairs, and the London Hydraulic Power Company's Pumping Station are recognized as a group.
