Description

The Tomb of John Smart, located at St Mattias in Poplar, is a chest tomb dating from around 1777, with the designer remaining unknown. It is constructed of stone and showcases a Neo-classical style. The tomb has a rectangular plan, featuring long sides adorned with carved inscribed roundels that are flanked by pilasters at the corners. The short ends have recessed oval panels, also flanked by fluted pilasters. A continuous moulded cornice projects forward above the pilasters, and the tomb is topped with a shallow pyramidal cover. John Smart was known as a distiller from Limehouse.
