Description

Old Poplar Town Hall and Council Offices, located on Poplar High Street, was built in 1870 on a corner site. The building features an octagonal tower topped with a finialed copper dome. It is constructed of stock brick with Portland stone dressings and includes some polychromy, showcasing a High Victorian free Gothic style with Venetian detailing.

The two-storey wings extend from the corner tower, with the northern wing along Woodstock Terrace being taller and more influenced by Venetian architecture. This wing has coupled and quadrupled groups of tall, narrow windows separated by granite shafts with foliate capitals, and it features a deep stone bracketed eaves cornice beneath a steep hipped slate roof. The west wing has a steep gable end slate roof with gabled dormers and stone-coped gables.

The corner tower is adorned with ornate detailing, including a bracket cornice and a pierced work parapet above the first floor. It also features dog-toothed eaves cornice on the dome and gablets on the narrower faces. A shafted portal with a carved archivolt and spandrels leads to the entrance. Vermiculated dwarf walls support cast iron area railings that end in pedestals, with Gothic shaft cast iron lamp standards flanking the doorway.
