Description

C and L Storage is a warehouse built between 1840 and 1850, located on a corner site with a distinctive bowed corner. The building is constructed of stock brick and features a plain parapet with stone coping. The main elevation has nine bays, while the return to the south has four bays. The basement and ground floor have segmental arched windows with iron-framed glazing. There is an off-centre hatch set in a nearly flush wood frame, and a late 19th-century wagon entrance with engineering brick trim at the north end.

Inside, the warehouse has a deep two-bay depth, creating two "aisles" supported by king post timber trusses. The wide span is achieved with valley and central plates carried on a girder, which is supported by cast iron columns with cross-section flanges. This building is a good example of a smaller warehouse from just after the first period of expansion and is part of one of the few surviving groups of warehouses in Docklands, contributing to the enclosed character of the narrow street. Its bowed corner also adds to its townscape value.
