Description
This is a warehouse block dating from around 1910, designed to complement the riverside Gun Wharves on the opposite side of the road, forming one of the few surviving “canyons” within the dockland area. It is similar in style to the earlier wharf buildings. The block is seven storeys high and built of stock brick with decorative stone detailing. The front elevation, facing High Street, curves towards the centre, following the road line. It comprises eight bays, with windows and hatch ranks set within tall, full-height panels. These panels are constructed from engineering brick with stepped brick heads, creating a pilaster effect. Flush plat bands are present on the fifth and seventh floors. A moulded cornice and parapet top the building, and the windows are two-light mullioned designs. The hatch ranks have white-painted brick trim around the reveals. A short section of panelled parapet is pierced by a lunette, reminiscent of a bellcot. On the western hatch rank, a lattice curved jib crane pivot is mounted to the top floor, accompanied by a detached curved operating box. The eastern elevation contains nine bays and features two straight jib cranes. The interiors remain largely as originally constructed. Consideration of this building should include reference to the listing for numbers 126 to 130 Gun Wharves on Wapping High Street.
