Description

The Public Control Department of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a building constructed in 1899. It features red brick with white stone banding and a slate roof, along with wide eaves cornices. The structure has two storeys and a basement, with seven bays facing Calvert Avenue and seven bays facing Virginia Road, plus a rounded end with three bays, two of which are under a gable that includes three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The building showcases a variety of windows set in moulded stone architraves, and there is a shallow arch with a dripstone mould above the carriageway entrance on Calvert Avenue.

This building is part of the Boundary Estate, which is one of the early London County Council estates known for its advanced design for the time. The estate features a range of architectural details and its streets radiate from a central raised park located in Arnold Circus. The entire estate is recognized as a group, which includes several streets: Arnold Circus, Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue, Camlet Street, Club Row, Hocker Street, Ligonier Street, Montclare Street, Naverre Street, Old Nichol Street, Palissy Street, Rochelle Street, Swanfield Street, and Virginia Street.
