Description
Clifton House dates from 1899 and is part of the Boundary Estate, an early London County Council housing development notable for its innovative design. The estate's streets radiate from Arnold Circus. The building is constructed of red brick with roughcast rendering to the top storey above a brick string course, and has a red tiled roof with wide, partly bracketed eaves. It is four storeys and has dormers, with a double rank in the centre; an additional five storeys are present under the turrets and gables. The facade is irregular, with twenty-seven windows, those on the first to third floors set within arched recesses. Towers flank the central two bays, with outer gables and a six-bay advanced block. The northern end features an archway spanning the ground to the third floor, incorporating recessed windows and an iron balcony on the third floor. The inner facade has a wide gable over seven bays. Clifton House is situated within a wider group of buildings forming the Boundary Estate, which includes Arnold Circus, Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue, Camlet Street, Hocker Street, Ligonier Street, Montclare Street, Naverre Street, Old Nichol Street, Palissy Street, Rochelle Street, Swanfield Street, and Virginia Street.
