Description
Porter's House, formerly a laundry, was built in 1899 and is located on the west side of Montclare Street in the Boundary Estate. This building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped tiled roof that curves to the eaves. It has paired chimney stacks that are joined by arches and a long row of dormers in the roof. The wide eaves soffit is adorned with modillions and a dentil cornice below.
The building is two storeys high, with five windows on the front. The first-floor windows are two-light, featuring mullions and a transom with leaded glazing and stucco dressings. A brick string course runs below the sill height. On the ground floor, there are two six-light windows flanking a central door, which has a fanlight and a Tudor arch above it.
At the rear, there is a hexagonal brick boilerhouse chimney that rises from a square plinth. The top of the chimney is topped with a wide stuccoed cornice and has a band of blind arcading below.
The Boundary Estate is an early London County Council estate known for its advanced design for the time. It features a variety of architectural details, with streets radiating from a central raised park in Arnold Circus. The estate is a cohesive group that includes several streets, such as Arnold Circus, Boundary Street, Calvert Avenue, and others.
