Description

Shiplake House dates to 1899 and is part of the Boundary Estate, an early London County Council housing development known for its innovative design. It is situated within Arnold Circus, E2, alongside several other streets forming a cohesive group. The building is constructed of red brick with glazed ground floor windows, and the upper storeys are banded with orange brickwork, with the bands widening towards the top. The roof is slate, and string courses are present above the ground and third floor windows. The building has four main storeys, with a further two storeys incorporated into the central gable. It is three bays wide, with the outer windows forming canted bays between the first and third floors, featuring stucco dressings to their bases. The central window has stucco keystones. The ground floor features paired sash windows with segmental arches, flanking a round-arched entrance with a chequered tympanum and short pilasters between the door and the flanking narrow windows. Windows on the upper two floors in the central bay also have stuccoed tympana and keystones, and are flanked by banded brick pilasters. The windows are contemporary sashes with glazing bars. The Calvert Avenue façade has twelve windows and three gables. The ground floor has contemporary shop fronts unified by a common cornice.
