Description
Maudsley Hospital is a house that has been incorporated into the hospital complex, built between 1820 and 1840. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stucco dressings and features a parapeted roof. The building has a rectangular plan and consists of three storeys above a basement, with a three-window range. All openings are flat-arched.
The central entrance is accessed by stairs and is set within a rectangular porch supported by Ionic columns 'in antis' and an entablature. Each side wall of the porch has one window. There is one window on either side of the entrance, each with an entablature and a projecting cornice, and lintel strings are present. A storey band runs between the ground and first floors. The first-floor windows are adorned with architraves and feature alternating segmental and triangular pediments, with the central window supported by console brackets. A sill band is present for the second-floor windows, which each have an entablature. An entablature with a projecting cornice spans the entire elevation.
The original design of the sashes includes 2x2 for the ground floor with broad margin lights, 4x4 for the first floor, and 3x6 for the top floor. The left return of the building is unfenestrated, while the right return has two windows near the corner. The rear of the building has a three-window range, with many windows featuring sashes of an early 19th-century design. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to be similar to No. 103, which is located to the south.
