Description

This is an early 19th century pair of buildings located on Denmark Hill. The buildings are three storeys high on the front elevation, each originally with a single window, although the returns have three windows. The construction is of stock brick, with a stucco frieze, cornice, and blocking course, and a first-floor cill band. A ground floor shop front from the early 20th century obscures original arcading and a smaller shop has been added to the south corner, with a wall running back to an entrance. Inside, a covered way leads to an original door consisting of six ornamental panels with rounded pilasters and a cornice head, flanked by windows set in round-arched recesses. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars and are set beneath gauged brick arches. The rear elevation features paired stuccoed rounded bows. Significant original decoration remains inside, including enriched cornices, raised plaster panels with an anthemion design in a rear room, a graceful curved staircase, and original cellar fitments.
