Description

Catherine House is a house dating from the 1830s, originally part of a hospital complex. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, topped by a slate roof. The house is three storeys high with a basement, and has five bays, with the central bay projecting forward. A distinctive arrangement of horizontal bands mark the basement, lintel, sill, and top frieze, culminating in a cornice and blocking course. The windows have architraves; those on the ground floor are panelled, with ears featuring anthemion motifs, while the first-floor windows have gabled tops with cresting. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The entrance features a glazed doorcase and an Ionic porch with paired columns. A window above has a segmental head and a consoled Greek hood, which was damaged in 1984. There are two iron balconies on the first floor, along with iron area railings with anthemion heads. Later extensions to the left and right are of no particular architectural interest.
