Description

The Greek Orthodox Church, built between 1865 and 1870 by Henry Sumners, is a notable brick and stone structure featuring a symmetrical design. It stands two storeys high and consists of five bays. The ground floor has a rusticated base with flush stone bands and a string course above, topped with a parapet that includes segmental arches over each bay. The paired round-headed windows on the ground floor are supported by colonnetes with Byzantine capitals. The first floor features a lunette window with a banded arch and aprons, while the outer windows are Diocletian style, and the inner ones have two round-headed lights. The central bay is accentuated by a full-height architrave.

The round-headed entrance is flanked by columns and has incised decoration on the arch, leading to paired five-panel doors set within a frame. Above the entrance is an inscribed panel with Greek lettering and a lunette featuring a displayed two-headed eagle. The end bays are topped with cupolas that have eight-sided drums, round heads, columns at the angles, and sail vaults. The central cupola is octagonal, with columns and an entablature supporting a domical vault topped with a cross. This cross vault includes lunettes and a 12-sided cupola with a sail vault. The rear facade facing Princes Road features a canted apse with windows that have stilted arches and shafts, along with flanking canted bays set in recesses.
