Description
The Church of Saint Margaret is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1868 and 1869, designed by G.E. Street. It is built from common brick with red brick and stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. The church consists of a single vessel that forms both the nave and chancel, with the division indicated by a fleche and a cross-gable. The nave features aisles beneath lean-to roofs and lacks a clerestory, with paired three-light windows. The west end has two three-light windows, and a buttress between them supports a canopied statue of St. Margaret, with a rose window above. The aisles include projecting west entrances with two orders and rose windows above them. There is a passage leading to the rectory that has a half-hipped gable.
Inside, the church has six-bay nave arcades supported by banded marble columns and features a waggon roof. A circular font rests on six columns with a hexagonal base. The chancel is marked by a low marble wall with central iron gates, and it includes sedilia and a piscina with cusped arches. There is a memorial brass dedicated to R. Horsfall, who died in 1881. The walls and roofs are adorned with stencilled decorations by Maddox and Pearce, and there is a significant amount of stained glass created by Clayton and Bell.
