Description
Nos 188 to 198 on Kennington Lane, built as part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate development by Adshead and Ramsey in 1913-14, is a purpose-built shopping parade in the late Georgian style. This three-storey building features eight windows and is constructed of pink brick with Roman cement dressings. Notable architectural elements include a cornice and parapet with balustrading panels, as well as relief ornamentation on the rounded corner facing Cardigan Street.
The second floor has a cill band, while the first floor boasts a narrow balcony with a patterned cast iron rail, situated above an egg-and-dart cornice that separates the ground floor shop fronts. These shop fronts are divided by pilasters topped with feather and anthemion patterned capitals. The sash windows, which include glazing bars, alternate between tripartite designs on the first floor and feature deep segmental relieving arches with keystone masks, impost blocks, and fan reliefs in the tympana. The fourth bay from the left is distinguished by a wider single window framed in a moulded architrave with a dentil cornice and a panel above that displays a relief of mermaids.
