Caretakers House To The Church Of St John The Divine

The Caretaker's House for the Church of St John the Divine was built in 1954 by H S Goodhart-Rendel. This two-storey building features a near square plan and is constructed from stock brick with pantiled hipped roofs that include gablets and a catslide at the rear. The entrance is located on the side facade, which is at right angles to the road. The house has small, nearly square windows with central mullions, representing a simplified version of the glazing found in the main church. Positioned as a lodge to the adjacent vicarage at No. 92, this building reflects Goodhart-Rendel's opportunity to create an updated version of the secular Gothic style reminiscent of G E Street, whose church he was restoring nearby. The design is noted for its character and strength.
