Vicarage To The Church Of St John The Divine

The Vicarage to the Church of St John the Divine is a house built as a convent in 1954 by H S Goodhart-Rendel for the church. It is constructed of stock brick with pantiled roofs and has two storeys, including a former chapel in part of the roofspace. The architectural style is related to G E Street's adjoining church, which was built between 1870 and 1874 and later restored by Goodhart-Rendel after it suffered bomb damage.

The front elevation features an entrance to the left under an arch, flanked by a small window. There are six narrow windows with brick piers above and rose windows with steel-framed glazing in the gable. To the right of the facade, there is a large and small gable that forms a slightly projecting bay with irregular fenestration and an additional doorway. The foundation stone is inscribed with "ADMG 1954." The interior has not been inspected.

This building provided Goodhart-Rendel with a unique opportunity to create a modern interpretation of the secular Gothic style associated with G E Street, resulting in a characterful and strong design. The adjacent caretaker's house is an integral part of the overall composition.
