Description

This is a symmetrical terrace of six houses, numbered 9 to 13, built between 1847 and 1851 by John Barnett. The houses are part of a larger, unified architectural scheme encompassing numbers 1 to 8, 14 to 24, and 42 to 54 on St James’s Gardens. The construction is of stock brick and stucco, with three storeys and a basement. Each house is three windows wide, incorporating a recessed bay that links it to the neighbouring properties. The ground floor and basement are stuccoed, and feature round-headed windows with architraves and archivolt bands. Stone balconies, featuring low cast iron trellis balustrades, are present. A cornice runs over the ground floor, with first and top-floor windows having architrave surrounds and cornices. A cill band defines the top storey. The building is finished with a modillioned cornice and blocking course. Porches, accessed by steps, are located in the outer bays. These porches contain round-headed, panelled doors. Group Value: The terrace contributes significantly to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
