Description

This is a terrace of eight houses, numbered 1 to 8, forming a unified group with numbers 9-24 and 42-54 along St James’s Gardens in London. Built between 1847 and 1851, the terrace was designed by John Barnett. The houses are constructed of stock brick and stucco, arranged as pseudo-semi-detached pairs and extend over three storeys plus a basement. Each pair has four windows, with recessed two-storey outer bays connecting to the adjacent pair. The ground floor and basement are stuccoed, while the upper floors are brick. The ground floor features round-headed windows with architraves and archivolt bands. Stone balconies with low cast iron trellis balustrades are situated above the ground floor. A cornice sits above the ground floor, and the first and top floor windows are framed by architraves and cornices. A cill band runs along the top storey. A modillioned cornice and blocking course top the building. Porches with steps are located in the recessed outer bays, leading to round headed, panelled doors. Number 5 has a single window extension on the left, accompanied by an Ionic columned porch below. Number 7 lacks the cornice detail found on the other houses. Numbers 1 and 2 are dated.
