Description

A semi-detached pair of houses dating to the 1850s, located in Islington. The houses are constructed with a brick core covered in stucco, and have slate roofs. Each house is two bays wide, with steps leading to an entrance within the inner bay, set within a shared three-bay loggia featuring antae and round arches. The ground-floor windows are round-arched with archivolts. A moulded stucco sill band runs along the first-floor windows, which, over the loggia, are arranged in pairs recessed between engaged antae; the outer windows are framed with simple moulded architraves. A string course is present, topped by a dentil cornice to the eaves. The party wall is clearly delineated above the roofline, and corniced stacks are positioned at each end. The roof is hipped. The rear elevation features a two-storey, three-bay loggia in the centre, with a balustrade on the first floor. Ground-floor windows are detailed with architraves, cornices, and console supports; the first-floor windows are round-arched, with deep sills and window-guards. Numbers 38, 40-42, and 44 together constitute a notable group of Italianate designs.
