Description
Numbers 1 to 6 St Paul’s Place are a terrace of houses built between 1836 and 1837. The construction is primarily yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet. Each house is three storeys tall with a basement. They each have two windows facing the street.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor featuring banded rustication. Steps lead to a round-arched entrance; the doorcase is set within a recessed round arch of smooth stucco and is flanked by Ionic pilasters. Doors of the original design, along with renewed fanlights, are found at numbers 2 to 6. The ground-floor windows are also round-arched and set within recessed stucco arches. The upper-floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads, and retain their original sashes on the first and second floors of numbers 1 to 5. Balconies are present on all first-floor windows; numbers 2 to 5 have original single balconies supported by iron brackets with iron railings, while numbers 1 and 6 have replacements. A stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facade, with stacks positioned on the party walls separating the houses. Number 6 features a single-storey extension to the side with a round-arched window. The railings at number 2 are believed to be original, while the rest have been replaced.
