Description

Numbers 17 to 25, St Paul’s Place, are a group of terraced houses built between 1836 and 1837. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing, and have roofs hidden behind a parapet. The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and each has two windows.

The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor featuring banded rustication. Steps lead up to round-arched entrances, each set within a recessed round arch of smooth stucco, supported by Ionic pilasters and topped with a fanlight. Nos. 24 and 25 have decorative glazing to their fanlights, and the original panelled doors, though Nos. 17, 21, and 23 have replacement doors. The ground-floor windows are also round-arched, similarly recessed with smooth stucco, and Nos. 17 and 20–23 retain their original radiating glazing bars. The upper-floor windows have flat arches with gauged-brick heads, and some original sash windows remain. Bracketed balconies are present on all houses except Nos. 19 and 21. A stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facade, with stacks marking the party walls. The attached cast-iron area railings have various spearhead finials and piers decorated with anthemion motifs; however, these railings are partially damaged.
