539-541, LIVERPOOL ROAD

Nos. 539-541 Liverpool Road are terraced houses built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of yellow brick and stucco, with roofs that are hidden by a parapet. The buildings rise three storeys above a basement and feature a two-window range. The basement is stuccoed and is only slightly below street level. The ground floor of no. 541 is also stuccoed and has banded rustication. There are steps leading up to a flat-arched entrance, which has a plain stucco architrave with pilasters, a plain entablature, and a minimal cornice; however, the pilaster capitals are missing on no. 541.

All windows are flat-arched; no. 539 has two windows on the ground floor with heads made of gauged red brick, while no. 541 has one window with a moulded stucco architrave. The windows on the upper floors have gauged brick heads, except for the second floor of no. 539. The parapet has undergone significant rebuilding, and there are stacks on the party walls.

Inside, no. 539 features a round arch between the entrance hall and staircase, supported by pilasters and an archivolt. The staircase has turned newels and stick balusters, but it has been altered on the second flight between the ground and first floors. The top floor of both nos. 539 and 541 was inspected and revealed no original features of interest.
