Description
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Presbytery is a church and presbytery built between 1869 and 1870. It was founded by Canon Cornelius Keens and designed by F.H. Pownall. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with white and black brick banding, and some stone dressing, topped with slate roofs. It is designed in the Early English style, featuring a high gabled west front and a low north aisle that adjoins a large square tower. An archway connects the church to the presbytery, which has 4/4 sash windows above it. There is a stair turret with a steep roof and a narrow gabled wing that is three storeys tall plus a basement, featuring a two-window range of 4/4 sashes.
Inside, the church is faced with red brick and black banding, and includes stone dressings such as carved stiff leaf capitals on the nave arcades by Sarmer and Brindley. The tall nave has a clerestory and a hammerbeam roof. The Stations of the Cross are painted carved oak in high relief by Anton Drape, created in 1909. The sanctuary features a green and white marble altar, side altars, and a gallery that were remodeled in 1960-1961 by A.H. Archard.
